The family and I had a fantastic day of Oppo Hunting.
Left early in the morning and spent half the day driving all around Tampa at spots we knew would fit certain categories, all while keeping an eye out for other things.
The boys got to learn a little bit as we explained to them anything that had some historical value. We did not explain the historical value of 2001 Odyssey.
Some highlights:
Someday we will conquer gravity
Recyclosaurus
So, we got to see some sights, learn some things, and get out of the house while staying safe. All great things and the exact reason I thought we would enjoy it. We did. And still two more weekends! Going to have to go a little further though next weekend.

I did have so much fun driving all about looking for crazy little places I never knew existed. I am on campus without a car and so I will now be confined to walking distance. Still, the Oppo Hunt has proven to be very fun.

I’m having fun as well, spent about 3 hours yesterday getting the nearby stuff and 6 today getting the further-radius searching in. At this point I’ve run out of things I know of and that are readily nearby so it will be a challenge to get many more points.

Hey, another Florida Man ! I’m right by Orlando, but I’m planning a super day trip down to Miami to snag the tallest building and tunnel points. M ay even swing by the everglades national park. I have to go down south anyways, might as well Oppohunt, right?

I didn't even know we had tunnels in Florida until last week, haha!

Had a fun day today doing a loop west and south from Boston. Probably not super efficient points-wise, but got to see some interesting stuff I wouldn’t have otherwise.
I was very pleased to find a non-museum biplane at my grass airstrip:
The grass airstrip was actually interesting in and of itself, as you can see, there’s basically nothing separating the runway from everything else, you could just sort of walk out there. They were having a fly-in this weekend, so there were bunches of planes, for normal general aviation, to ultralights, to a stunt plane and a powered parachute. To get to the airport you needed to drive a mile down a rail-trail, which while a gravel road here, was a paved bike path just down on the other side of the entrance so driving down felt a bit wrong. Oh, and the structure in the background and the blue crane/bucket loader thing in the background are a trapeze school which is also a bit different (a guy dangling from the crane fell into the water, but I didn’t get it on camera).

Who’s Felix? One of your kids or the Wankel rotor guy? My son (born in Tampa!) is named Felix.
I recognize the Recyclosaurus from the Science Museum on Fowler. T
he flying saucer is

Cool, a Futuro house, always wondered why someone never tried to reverse engineer the molds and reproduce them, given the obsession with tiny homes and midcentury design

Also, if your “friend” is just looking for grass strips for the oppo hunt, this link might be useful (though some listed are long gone): https://www.aopa.org/destinations/search?ne=42.6361200,-70.6712668&sw=41.8794176,-72.1544211&grass=1
(you can update the URL with your coordinates)

Noice! I’ve been doing a crazy satellite search for abandoned race tracks and all I’ve found are on property I might have to... use stealth... for a picture lol
